News that former Carlton chief Steve Hewlett has been appointed Visiting Professor at Salford University should ring some alarm bells for students who want to plot a career deep into the future.
An accomplished journalist, Hewlett has allowed himself to be best remembered for allowing Martin Bashir to secure that hour long interview with Diana Princess of Wales. Two things about his appointment disappoint.
Salford are an established media school so they should know an old hand in old media will not provide the grounding students need for the new media world. Second though, Hewlett has been scracthing around for a role since losing out in the Carlton/Granada merger. Visiting Professor is not it.
