The EIT Idea, Read the Last Post

June 7, 2006

Craig Winneker over on techcentralstation , now called tcs daily, is pushing the idea of a European Institute of Technology to match M.I.T over in the USA. Enough acronyms for now.

Research is important to the new content world because future content will not necessarily be pieced together by people. Application generated content is going to be an important source of corporate content (for a venture capitalist view of this see Peter Rip) and very likely our own.

If that idea is difficult to get your head around then it's worth remembering that current user-generated content is already ably assisted by the machine (flickr.com, veoh.com guba.com). By and large those these are primitive content applications.

Who will dominate tomorrow's media landscape will be decided by innovation in applications rather than narrative skills.

Why he's wrong is that the European Institutions have already stretched the idea of collaboration further than nature would allow. Look at Yellow Arrow below, a project that was up and running in the USA in 2004 but an idea which is only just being funded in Europe now – and we're talking of Europe here funding the big Telco and Telco supplier organisations.  Europe lags behind but it's not about the research.
